1710116 - UnframedNice sentiment and signature by the most popular American poet of his time.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1807–1882. American poet. Autograph Sentiment Signed, Yours truly / Henry W. Longfellow on a 2¼” x 4½” piece of paper, dated in Longfellow’s hand, 1876.
Longfellow was the most popular American poet of his time. His works include Paul Revere’s Ride, The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie. In 1863, he published Tales of a Wayside Inn, a collection of poems in which people at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Massachusetts, each tell a story in the form of a poem. Longfellow was also the first American to translate Dante’s Divine Comedy.
Longfellow has signed on a small piece of laid paper typical of the period. The piece is nicely centered on the paper, which makes it perfect for framing for display. Longfellow’s brown ink signature is a bit light but nevertheless is easily legible. The piece is in very fine condition.
